Steampunk Technology

In our world, we are familiar with steampunk technology as a lot of clockwork technology as well as machines powered primarily by steam, though communities utilizing this technology do also have machines that run on coal in fireboxes. That being said, trains do not yet exist in Lotherria.

There is an industrial revolution in communities where this technology exists. All sorts of machines have been manufactured to cover a whole range of needs and wants as well as the rise of some factory jobs that utilize steam and clockwork to run the lines.

Moving pictures and animated shorts are not yet a thing, but it is close to becoming a reality. These societies have gramophones and a way to record photographs and music. While there is theater, there is not yet a cinema, but what has been created are nickelodeon salons where patrons can pay a small price to watch the array of pictures inside the machine. These are normally entertaining little features of a comedic sort or to show off some far-off places and peoples. In some communities, there are red light districts where one can find Red Nickelodeons. These salons usually also feature a comic book shop, though the demographic is definitely adult. These comics are normally pornographic, as well as the nickelodeons in the salon. Unlike regular salons, the nickelodeons are in private stalls or rooms and are cleaned between viewers.

While very rare, the occasional air ship is a thing, though normally in mountainous areas, though they do exist in other locations: a boat lifted by hot air in a blimp. However, there are regular hot air balloons that are more accessible to these communities and make fun novelties as well as lovely festival items.

Sewer systems are now possible in these communities with steel pipes, which now means indoor plumbing for many, including a flushing toilet, a bathtub with faucets, as well as a sink. For those who have not yet updated to these features, a pipe and pump in a well is an easy way to get water without traveling all the way to the river. Hot water pumps are also a thing, providing hot water that does not need to be boiled on a stove or over a fire. In wealthy homes, the ceramic used to make toilets and sinks are beautifully hand-painted with intricate designs. Decorative curtains are also a thing people want now that the tubs also come with shower options.

Some other machines in use are sophisticated farm equipment. While there are no cars, there are vehicles for making harvesting and even processing crops much faster than by hand. It does also depend on the crop. Working a farm is a hybrid business mixing machines and animals for the labor needed. It has also made processing animals easier with slaughterhouses becoming more streamlined for quicker, easier processing. There are also processing houses where people can bring their hunted game to be processed if they do not want to process it themselves.

Refrigeration is now possible. It is a dream feature with many homes purchasing freezers and refrigerators to keep their foods longer, making preparation for the winter much more of a breeze. This even means the ability to create new treats...like ice cream! Communities with steampunk technology now have ice cream shops, creating the predecessor to what we could recognize to become the 1950s ice cream shop. They have the burgers, the fries, the ice cream, the and the sodas. The only thing missing is the jukebox, and that invention may not be too far in the future for Lotherria.
