Medieval Technology

cogs.webp

By today's standards, it would seem our Medieval days were primitive. However, compared to a primitive society, the medieval technology was quite good for its time. This is the case in Lotherria as well. It is most common to see something that looks medieval in small villages. There is agriculture and an upgrade in tools to simple to iron age options. As such, societies utilizing these technologies can craft all sorts of metal works, armor, weapons, metal tools, etc.

These communities have domesticated animals and utilize wagons and have made full use of the wheel, not only in transportation, but also in mills to make flour and cornmeal. More trades are available, such as cobblers, potters, smiths, carpenters, stone masons, weavers, seamstresses, brewers, wine makers and even professional medical care with a higher understanding of medicine than wild herbs and superstitions (not to say they don't have some of their own). There are schools and universities, libraries, a proper militia, taverns, and more.

These communities have access to clockwork devices, with large, public clocks being erected in the town centers or placed in churches or courthouses. Some wind-up toys are also available.

While there are the marks of what is recognizable as a society, there are still some primitive necessities. There is no plumbing in some of the places like this, yet some others do use a complex aqueduct system.

These communities also have use of pully systems, trebuchets, and more. They also can make fortified buildings and forts. Homes are much nicer and more comfortable, though the level of comfort depends on the wealth of the individual or family. It could mean the difference between a home where the people are sleeping with their animals in a one room structure with a central hearth to a home with furniture, a separate location for livestock, blankets, rugs, cast iron cookware and even a woodburning stove if not a fireplace rather than a central hearth. It could also mean more bedrooms for privacy.

As far as bathrooms, individuals have to find a place to do so outside, utilize outhouses, or, where people live closer together, use a shared semi-private privy. There are also public privies set up like ancient Roman public privies with communal sponges on sticks and everyone able to see each other and converse. Some think nothing of it, and some are a little more timid. There is an area to wash one's hands with soap and provided water. As far as water overall, it is brought back from rivers in pots. Men and women are both responsible for gathering water. This water will serve as bath water, drink, wash water, and cooking water.

It certainly is possible to live rather comfortably in these communities if one doesn't mind a simple way of life.
